TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Lightning strikes can do a lot of damage to your property but more importantly, they can be deadly if they strike a person.
According to the National Weather Service, there are about 25 million flashes of lightning each year in the United States.
Dr. Greg Bierly, Director of Indiana State's Climate Lab, has some advice about staying safe when lightning threatens, “If there is any indication that a thunderstorm is in the neighborhood, they should act as if lightning is a present danger and take cover appropriately."
You should take shelter in a building that is closed.
Do not take shelter under trees, car ports, or open garages.
A metal-topped car can also provide you cover from lightning.
