Temperature Signs Misleading

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (wthi) - It's Mid-July in Terre Haute, and the temperature is 107! No, make that 100. Two blocks away, it's 93 and another half a block down it's 95. So, what's going on?

The key to understanding the differences on sign thermometers all has to do with an itty-bitty box on top of the roof.

Inside this box is a temperature sensor. In order to be accurate, it must be constantly adjusted. When sunlight hits a roof, hot air radiates up to the box, and the temperature reads much higher than the actual temperature.

Temperature signs are a great convenience, but not always accurate, especially in the summer.

Whether it's 107 or 93, it's still hot and you need to be careful no matter what the thermometer reads.
