TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and my favorite, sweet corn are popping up all over the Wabash Valley at local farmer’s markets.

"You get into a grocery store and you don't know if it's been on a truck from California for six days," said Richard Gartzke of the Lyford Farmer’s Market.

And because the produce is locally grown, you know it's fresh

"Most of them pick the corn in the morning before the dew is off and every tomato I have was picked within the last two days," said Gartzke.

Buying from a local market also has another benefit.

"I just encourage everybody who's out there to visit their local farmer's market. The money stays in the community and it helps the local farmer," said Gartzke.

Whether it's beans, melons, tomatoes or whatever else is in season, check out any local farmer's market. Your tummy will be happy and you'll be helping your neighbor.
