Hunger challenge to humble participants

Can you live on $4.18 for food, per day?

WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTHI) - Troy Fears and the United Way of the Wabash Valley are issuing a challenge to for everyone to experience what it’s like to have an extremely limited amount of money for food for an entire week.

UWWV, partnered with Catholic Charities, are reissuing the United Way’s Hunger Challenge, which calls for participants to take the average amount a person on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) lives on—about $29.27 a week, which amounts to $4.18 per day to spend on food—and see if you can survive a week.

They are issuing that challenge starting Sunday, September 16 until Saturday, September 22.

This is a humbling experience for all that participate, enlightening you to the reality of people that unfortunately have no other choice but to live in these circumstances.

In 2011, nearly 50 people participated, with the weekly rate being around $32.

This year, more people are participating in the challenge.

One of the major goals of this challenge is to open the minds of the participants, and encourage those that can donate, or help in any way, to do so.
