Sycamores volleyball falls to WIU

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Senior Shea Doran had 19 kills and junior Molly Murphy had a double double but the Sycamores fell in a heartbreaker 3-2 to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois Sunday in the final game of the Jessica Barkman Classic.

The Sycamores found themselves down early as they dropped the first set 25-14 to the Leathernecks.

In the second set, the two teams battled back and fourth, point-for-point and found themselves tied 23-23. The Leathernecks then had back-to-back kills to take a two sets to none lead over the Sycamores.

The Sycamores would not go down easily and came out on fire to start the third set, taking a 10-1 lead over the Leathernecks. The Sycamores led the set wire-to-wire and won by a final score of 25-16.

Both teams traded points to start the fourth set before the Sycamores took a 13-12 lead off a kill by freshman Victoria Swigart. The Sycamores led the rest of the set, winning 25-19 to tie the match at two sets apiece and forcing a fifth set.

Neither team was able to find a clear advantage in the fifth set. The Sycamores faced a Leatherneck match point on three occasions with Swigart and Doran getting kills to keep the match going. The Leathernecks then got a kill to to give them the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.

Doran had 19 kills for the Sycamores with nine digs while Murphy had a double double with 13 kills, and 13 digs. Junior Loni Mackinson also added 51 assists for the Sycamores.

Indiana State will return to action Friday when they travel to Miami, Ohio for the Miami of Ohio Tournament.
