TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Indiana State women’s soccer team scored a pair of goals just one minute and 16 seconds apart on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, earning the Sycamores a 2-1 comeback victory over the visiting Murray State Racers.
Murray State (0-4) took a 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room, using a long ball over the top of the Indiana State defense in the 21st minute to net the game’s opening goal. Amber Hanson sent the ball towards the Indiana State penalty area where Veronika Pribyslavska got just enough of a touch on the ball to chip the attempt past freshman Erin Mitchell.
Both sides took three shots in the opening 45 minutes, while Indiana State led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Indiana State (3-2) created multiple chances in the final 30 minutes of play, including a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 69th minute when the Sycamores earned a penalty kick. Junior Shelby Troyer stepped up to take the kick, but Murray State goalkeeper Yi Du chose the right direction and blocked the penalty kick with an outstanding diving save.
The Sycamores did not let that missed opportunity affect their attack, as the home side continued to push forward.
Troyer redeemed herself in the 71st minute, tying the game on a header in the six-yard box. Sophomore Bria Caldwell drew a foul on the right wing, setting up fellow sophomore Emily Chura to send in a perfect free kick that found Troyer for the goal. The goal was Troyer’s second of the season.
Caldwell was again key in setting the game-winning goal for the Sycamores, working passed a Murray State defender on the endline before sending a pass to the center of the penalty box. Junior Taylor Reed was waiting for Indiana State and sent home her first goal of the 2012 season.
Murray State pressed forward in the closing minutes looking for a tying goal and nearly leveled the match in the 86th minute. MSU’s Jenna Finke headed the ball towards the near post following a corner kick, but sophomore Alexandra Rodas got her head on the ball and popped the shot into the air before the Sycamores cleared the ball from danger.
Indiana State plays their next four games away from Terre Haute, beginning with a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., for two games in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The Sycamores play Montana on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and Sacramento State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
