TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Indiana State Sycamore football team won 57-7 over Saint Joesph’s on Saturday night. With the win, ISU opens the season with a win for the first time sinice 1996.
Darrius Gates ran for three touchdowns and 160 yards to help ISU jump out to the big lead. The 160 yard outburst from Gates was the most rushing yards any ISU rusher had in a season opener.
Shakir Bell also rushed for 133 yards on the night for the Sycamores giving ISU their first duo to break 100 yards rushing in the same game since 2004.
Also, Indiana State ran for a school record seven rushing touchdowns.
Indiana State has not won an opening game since it won 48-0 over Mars Hill in 1996. That year the Sycamores went 6-5, which is also the last year they finished with a winning season.
The last time the Sycamores scored 50 points was in 1999.
A total of 5,158 people were in attendance at Memorial Stadium.
