Fast start sends No. 1 Indiana past Purdue 83-55

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana is still setting new standards.

On Saturday, Will Sheehey scored a career-high 22 points and set a school record by making all nine of his shots while Cody Zeller added 19 points to lead No. 1 Indiana to an 83-55 rout of Purdue.

Indiana (23-3, 11-2 Big Ten) has won eight of its last nine, bucking the recent trend of No. 1 teams losing games and falling out of the top spot. Instead, the Hoosiers will likely remain atop the poll for a third straight week and will head into Tuesday night's showdown at Michigan State with at least a share of the league lead. The Spartans entered the day as the Big Ten's co-leader and were to play at Nebraska later Saturday.

The Hoosiers have now beaten their archrival four straight times, all by double digits, and became the first Indiana team in this 200-game series to sweep Purdue with victory margins of 20 or more points twice in the same season.

Purdue (12-14, 5-8) has lost five of six. The Boilermakers were led by Terone and Anthony Johnson, who each finished with 11 points. Freshman center A.J. Hammons, who had 30 points in the first matchup, finished with six.

It wasn't all good news for Indiana, though. Victor Oladipo, Indiana's best defender and the Big Ten's No. 8 scorer at 14.3 points, left the game in the final minute after Terone Johnson stepped on his foot. He immediately limped into the locker room and did not play in the second half. There was no immediate update on his condition.

But after taking control quickly in the first half, the Hoosiers didn't need Oladipo in the second.

Christian Watford opened the game with 10 of his 14 points in the first five minutes, giving the Hoosiers a 14-5 lead. After Purdue got a 3-pointer from Terone Johnson, Jordan Hulls answered with a 3 for the Hoosiers — a play on which Purdue was called for a foul underneath. Indiana capitalized on that, too, getting a basket from Sheehey, whose dunk on the next possession gave the Hoosiers a 21-8 lead less than nine minutes into the game.

The Hoosiers were nowhere close to finished, as they used a 7-0 spurt to make it 33-14.

Purdue finally rallied for six straight points, with Hammons on the bench after picking up his second foul, and closed the half with a basket from Ronnie Johnson to make it 41-29.

Indiana then opened the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 53-33 lead, and used a 19-4 second-half spurt to seal the outcome.
