Etling to honor verbal commitment to Purdue

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Tuesday, in a one-on-one interview, Terre Haute South Quarterback and Purdue commit Danny Etling told Sports 10 he will honor his verbal commitment to the Boilermakers.

The four-star recruit originally committed back in April to former Boilers Head Coach Danny Hope.

When Hope was fired in November, Etling had said he wanted to see who Purdue hired before honoring his commitment.

Last week, Purdue named Darrell Hazell their new head coach. Hazell was at Kent State.

The first recruit Hazell met with was Etling.

Sunday night, “He told me I was his first call and first visit. I’m his guys for this class,” Etling told Sports 10. “No matter what anyone trying to say at other schools, he wants me there, and thinks I can do big things there.”

The Terre Haute South senior said his only question he has now for his new coach is who his Offensive Coordinator will be.

Coach Hazell told Etling to trust him on that, which the new QB does.

“He is a really good guys first off, then a really good coach,” said Etling. “Those two together, really mix together and make a great person you want to play and win for.”

Etling is the highest rated recruit in the 2013 Purdue class. He’s ranked 172nd, in ESPN’S top 300 in the 2013 class. 

This past summer, Etling took part in the prestigious Elite 11 National Quarterback Camp. He will also play in the National Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Game in Texas on December 30.

After that, Etling will enroll at Purdue on January 7 for Spring classes.

He will also take part in the Boilers spring football practices.

“Purdue has told me I can go in and at least compete. If I don’t win, I redshirt. That’s the worse case scenario for me,” said Etling. “I just want a chance to compete and see where I stack up with the other guys.”
