TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Two Wabash Valley political parties are responding to a stance made during Indiana's senatorial debate on Tuesday night. After republican Richard Mourdock made a comment concerning his view on women's health.
News 10 talked to party leaders in Vigo County for their reaction.
On Wednesday morning Richard Mourdock's comments were all over the news; bringing the Hoosier state's election for senator to the forefront of national politics.
It's an important race because it could decide which party controls the United States senate.
Right here in our backyard local party leaders reacted to the comments.
Democrats saying there are two Richard Mourdocks, and the extreme one came out last night.
"What I think happened in the debate last night is that Mourdock got caught up in the moment and really expressed his true feelings on abortion,” Democratic Indiana representative Clyde Kersey said.
But across town at a republican rally in Terre Haute, Indiana's Republican party chairman Eric Holcomb explained that Murdock is a proud pro-life candidate and that's who he has always been.
"He even said, if I was inarticulate, or if there was any confusion, (I) apologize for that miscommunication. He simply was stating that he is a pro-life candidate,” Holcomb said.
After Mourdock and his opponent Joe Donnelly made their comments on the incident Wednesday afternoon, the true decision on how the voters will react to Tuesday night’s debate will come on a Tuesday in two weeks.
