TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - If you've been out shopping you've probably noticed the Salvation Army bell-ringers are out taking donations. Did you know the majority of them are paid minimum wage?

Salvation Army officials say about 90 percent of their force is paid and 10 percent are volunteer. They want more volunteers so that more money can go to the needy, a population that's growing.

"If we're not paying bell-ringers that only adds to the grand total and helps us to help that many more people who are so desperately in need," said Envoy Gordon Hoag of Terre Haute Salvation Army.

If you are interested in helping the Salvation Army but are too busy to volunteer for a bell-ringing shift, you can also have an online kettle. It just involves emailing friends and family for their donations. Visit saterrehaute.org for more information.
