TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The U.S. Postal Service said it wants to drop Saturday delivery. This proposal comes after the post office reported a $3.8 billion loss for 2009.
On Friday nights in Terre Haute, postal workers busily sort through the mail to get ready for Saturday delivery.
One letter after another shoots through a conveyer belt, but all of this could come to an abrupt halt.
As Saturday delivery looks to get pushed aside and the thought of these mail trucks staying parked through the weekend has some concerned.
"I'm actually a big eBayer so that will really affect me selling things and buying things, because a lot of it gets delivered on Saturdays," Erin Rudisel said.
The postal service is down in mail volume and with the recession hitting it's forced 40,000 jobs to be eliminated already this year.
This is the third year in a row that the agency has posted a loss. Officials said online bill paying has also contributed to the loss in revenue.
The Saturday delivery cut would save $3.5 billion and if Congress decides to accept the proposal it will take effect sometime in 2010
