WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - A southern Indiana community looks to turn a half million dollar grant into new sidewalks.
Downtown Washington, Ind. is going to get at least four blocks of new sidewalks through a grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
Officials said the downtown has gone through a lot of positive changes but the sidewalks have not kept pace and they need replacing.
"The sidewalks along Main Street have become unsafe through the years," Washington Mayor Larry Haag said. "The last 10 or 15 years they have just continued to deteriorate."
"I'm thrilled about it," Chill Wellness Center Amy Stuffle said. "It's going to be an improvement to Main Street and our community and I can't wait for it to get started."
Work is expected to begin in the spring and be completed in 18 months.
