WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - A seed of an idea is sprouting into a community garden in southern Indiana.

The city of Washington is taking a piece of surplus land and getting it ready for the citizens to use to grow their own food.

Mayor Larry Haag said it is something the citizens have asked for.

"It's open to the public and we're doing one raised bed at this time and if demand is high enough, we can do additional raised beds," Haag said.

Right now, the community garden needs a little more work to get the beds in place and ready to raise something.

While the city is providing the land and doing the initial work, the Washington Diversity Center will be managing the community garden.
