VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Cold temperatures and icy roads caused dozens of accidents and took four lives Monday night. Police said road conditions caused nearly 75 accidents throughout the Wabash Valley.

Vermillion County emergency crews responded to 20 slide offs on State Road 63. An SUV flipped on Highway 40, one of 16 accidents in Vigo County.  In Clay, Vermillion and Vigo Counties there were lines of traffic and slide offs keeping crews busy for about four hours, throughout the evening.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said police were forced to shut down some roadways.

"We'll close off the overpass, get some sand trucks, salt trucks and at least try to melt it," Chief Plasse said. Of those accidents, two were deadly.

The first happened in Vigo County on Highway 40 in front of Rose Hulman where two people died.  The second happened in Clay County, a couple's truck slid off the road and hit a tree, both Claudia and Jack Hayes died at the scene.

Both deadly accidents are under investigation.
