TERRE HAUTE, Ind - Peaceful, serene, and picturesque three words one can use to describe the wetlands of Vigo County.

On Friday Anne Hazlett the director for the Indiana Department of Agriculture visited the wetlands with the purpose of preserving the area.

"In addition to the aesthetics that you see here, this body of water and the wild life you see is not only beautiful to look at but it provides a wide range of environmental benefits from clean air to clean water and less soil erosion," said Anne Hazlett the Director of Indiana department of Agriculture.

So far conservationists have secured one section of property along the Wabash River. It is roughly 1,200 acres and belongs to the Vigo County parks department.

"The trails are not all constructed yet, there will probably six miles of trail some of that will be constructed yet this fall. Once they are done people can use the trails," said Max Miller a member of the Wabash Rover development committee.

"Obviously we will continue to work with agricultural land owners and support our conservation partners as they move forward," said Anne Hazlett.

Vigo County officials expect to have 80 percent of the project complete in five years.
