TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Students at DeVaney Elementary School took part in a special program for Earth Day.

Students were able to see how a professional climbs a tree using a series of ropes and harnesses. The message of the program was the importance of trees and why we need to protect them.

"Hopefully, the kids will leave here, go home, tell their brothers, their sisters, their aunts and uncles, the next door neighbors that trees are very important that we got to take care of them. You know trees need people, and people need trees," environmental educator Tim Womick said.

As part of the program, students were brought up front to help teach the others about the environment, taking on roles of a bird nest and trees.

The program was also presented to students at Fayette Elementary Wednesday morning.
