TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTHI) - When the flood water rushed down last June, it destroyed a lot of bridges and roads making it hard for drivers to get around.

Still, one year later a lot of the bridges are out, many of which will begin construction this summer.

According to officials within the county highway departments in Vermillion, Clay, Vigo and Sullivan all roads have been repaired.

Even though it has been a long road for those facing the inconvenience every day.

"Be patient as possible were working as quickly as we can the vendors are going above and beyond to get these things done for us," Vigo County Commissioner Judy Anderson said.

Vigo County Roads Open

Status of Vigo County Bridges:

Structure No. 01027, Thralls Road Bridge - Under construction

Bridge No. 149, Crews Place - Under design. Estimated bid date August 2009

Bridge No. 161, Pottsville Road - Under design. Estimated bid date April 1010

Bridge No. 165, New Goshen Road - OPEN

Bridge No. 171, Hollingsworth Road - Under design. Estimated bid date July 2009

Bridge No. 198, Devanold Road - Under design. Estimated bid date September 2009

Bridge No. 201, Baldwin Road - Under design. Estimated bid date August 2009

After the bid date, it generally takes about a week for myself and the county attorney to review the documents and make a recommendation to the commissioners. Upon being notified of the award, the contractor generally has 10 days to begin work.

The biggest chunk of time since the flood was spent coordinating with FEMA, getting their people here and getting the funding approved. After that we have to select consultants, do extensive survey work and do geotechnical investigations. All of this must happen before design of the new structure can even begin. Although we want to get the new bridges built and open as soon as possible, we cannot shortcut the process on structures that the travelling public depends upon to be safe.

Clay county:
