TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - During this economy, people are looking at do-it-yourself projects when it comes to home improvements or repairs.

However, finding the money to buy the equipment needed can be costly. That's why Shannon Girton of West Terre Haute found a way to cut that cost.

Girton needed to sand down his entire deck so he could stain it for the winter. That's a big project that was going to cost him $2,500 if he hired someone else.

"That's when I knew I had to take the time and do it myself," Girton said.

Girton knew it was going to take more than just this hand sander to get the job done, he needed a big floor sander.

However, if Girton were to buy a new sander it would've cost him around $2,000, so instead he rented one at D.I.Y Rentals in Terre Haute for one day and it only cost him $35.

D.I.Y-Rentals owner Holly Wuestefeld said he's not the only one taking advantage during the recession.

"People are still wanting to do things and still wanting to spend money, so this helps them stretch their dollar by renting instead of buying everything," Wuestefeld said.

Are you renting more equipment this year for those do-it-yourself projects?
