TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Parent-teacher conferences are typically held in November in Vigo County, giving teachers and parents a chance to catch up on where students excel and where they have trouble.

The state's new 180 day requirement says that half days previously set aside for parent teacher conferences no longer count toward the school year. So, Vigo County schools have done away with them.

Educators say now they're meeting with parents on a case by case basis, but they worry this won't be enough

"When you have that opportunity to do a one-on-one, face-to-face conversation with a parent, you just glean so much more than you can through just writing notes back and forth or emailing," Dixie Bee Elementary Principal Mika Cassell said.
