TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A man accused of hitting a pedestrian that later died will not go to trial.
Leslie Helt's jury trial was slated for this week. However, he accepted a plea deal. He pled guilty to operating a vehicle with illegal substance in his system.
Police arrested Helt in December 2008, when they say he hit Juan Perez. Perez was crossing the street at the time. He was taken to a hospital and later died.
Helt tested positive for marijuana. He pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge.
He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, suspended and one year of informal probation.
