TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - People with serious medical complications have been denied the H1N1 vaccine.
Health departments said those with health risks will get the first doses available of the H1N1 vaccine, however, people are questioning why they have not received the vaccine.
The first shipment of the vaccine went to first responders and emergency workers. These people need to be healthy, so they can help others if a disaster should strike.
After that, the Vigo County Health Department looked at the supply of vaccines. Health officials then decided to make what was left available to all school children, who fall into the target group.
Once children have been vaccinated, they will move on to other target groups.
"If they are 25 to 64 years of age and there is some type of underlying medical condition that would compromise their immune system, they do fall into one of the five target groups. At this point and time, we are not vaccinating that target group yet. We will... But at this time we are not because we simply don't have enough of the vaccine to do each one of those target groups right now," Megan Bland with the Vigo County Health Department said.
Once all of the target groups receive vaccinations, the vaccine will be available to the public. Health officials said target group vaccinations should be complete in the next six to eight weeks.
