TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Duke Energy ordered to shut down units at a local power plant.

The ruling Friday by a federal judge out of Indianapolis said units two, three, and five at the West Terre Haute Wabash River Station must be shut down by the end of September, citing sulfur dioxide emmissions.

The announcement ends the second phase of a trial from last year which found the company violated the Clean Air Act during renovations more than 17 years ago.

The units impacted are more than 50 years old. The company had proposed shutting down the units in three years when a new plant in Edwardsport goes online.

However, Friday's ruling accelerates that time table.

Duke Energy will still have two units operating at the Wabash River station.
