A Vigo County deputy is injured in a crash involving another motorist. The accident took place around 11:30 Thursday morning on Chamberlain St. and Audrey Ave.
Police say a vehicle was stopped in the southbound lane, attempting to make a left turn. That's when 29-year-old Kristopher L. Mumma of Jasonville, Ind. approached the stopped vehicle, but failed to stop his own vehicle in time.
He swerved into the northbound lane and that's when he hit Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy Lieutenant Tim Gossett. Both Gossett and Mumma were taken to Union Hospital where they were treated and released for their injuries.
"I think an important factor here is the seatbelts as well as the airbags that were deployed probably helped sustain both individuals, both drivers from extensive injuries," said Chief Deputy Jake Compton.
Investigators said Mumma's attention was diverted to articles inside of his vehicle when he failed to stop in time.
