TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTHI) - Terre Haute has many festivals. Some that celebrate strawberries, others barbeque and now they have blueberries.

Terre Haute's first blueberry festival kicked off Thursday morning. The festival was put on mainly by downtown Terre Haute and Terre Foods. Terre Foods is a group working to start a cooperative store in Terre Haute.

Hundreds came out on Thursday to cool down and enjoy the free local music. The music wasn't all that's local, the blueberries were grown in Indiana. The ice cream was made in Clay City.

In keeping with the Terre Foods commitment to the environment, the festival leaves behind only a small carbon footprint.

The dishes used to serve the wholesome goodness can be composted, plus the silverware is biodegradable.

"I think it is good to support local farmers and local businesses one because it is great for our community. It builds the local economy and it keeps the money here and I also think it is good from an environmental standpoint to have food that travels less far," Terre Foods Tammy Tintjer said.
