TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The recession may have you watching every penny.

But one local business owner and his customers say that shouldn't keep you from getting out and enjoying yourself.

Bicycle retailers say the warm weather always brings in a lot of business, but the tough economy has more people coming in than ever before.

The Commerce Department reports orders for manufactured products, like bicycles, have increased far above expectations.

Dave Sutphin has been selling bikes in Terre Haute for over a decade.

People ride for fun and exercise, but now, he says they also come in out of an economic need.

"Ridership is up in general," said Sutphin. "We probably don't sell as many new bikes as we usually do, but we're working on a lot more older bikes."

Vigo County's 9.2 percent unemployment is no doubt a big cause.

Andy Gutish says he and his family use their bikes even to run errands.

"Definitely in town, anything within probably five or six miles," said Gutish. "If you've got the extra time to invest in doing that, it's a great opportunity to save money and get some exercise."

Sutphin says a bike and a few accessories, like a lock and helmet, will cost about $300 total, less than most car payments for one month.

"You don't need to insure it. It doesn't take any gas," said Sutphin. "And if you clean it up, it'll last forever."
