TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A woman was killed Wednesday in what police have called a freak accident.
The accident happened just after 8 a.m. Wednesday near 19th and Boston in North Terre Haute.
Preliminary investigation results indicate the woman was backing out of a driveway, according to witnesses. The victim got out of the vehicle to place mail in the mailbox, when the car went from park into reverse.
"From all accounts this appears to be an accident, just a very unusual accident and an unfortunate one, but it is an accident," assistant police chief Shawn Keen said.
Police are unsure whether she was trying to stop the vehicle when the person fell under the car and was killed.
The car finally came to a stop when it struck a house.
Police are not releasing any details about the victim until family members can be notified.
