TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Sunday night's shooting marks the second police related shooting in less than two years in Terre Haute.

In both shootings, police said the officers were in real danger. Police train for incidents involving deadly weapons to protect themselves.

While some may ask if officers could respond without using gun fire, assistant Chief Shawn Keen said that's how they're trained and it's for the safety of the officers.

"If they encounter a deadly weapon they're trained to fire as on the firing range, they're trained to protect themselves and innocent civilians," Keen said.

The shooting remains classified as a death investigation.

Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said a full investigation is routine for cases like this.

"Definitely at this point it doesn't look like there will be any charges or anything, we're just trying to finalize exactly what occurred and make sure statements were taken from everyone involved," Modesitt said.

As for the two officers, they have the option to take time off, if they wish.
