PARKE COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Parke County Deputy Jim Awbrey was rear-ended by another vehicle almost three months ago and paralyzed from the chest down. He's been humbled by the community's response ever since.
In August, Awbrey was escorting a slow-moving semi on State Road
63 when a pick-up truck rear-ended him at about 60- miles an hour.
"The only thing I can remember that day is seeing a lot of
good guys that I've known helping me out," said Awbrey.
The help has continued ever since. During the interview he
sat on a porch built by friends and fellow officers who have also
run a number of benefits to raise money for his bills.
"It's humbling," said Awbrey. "That's the only word I can
describe it with."
The most recent help came from Indiana Department of Natural
Resources Officer Max Winchell.
"When he had that accident it hit home," said Winchell. "He's the same age as I am practically and got three kids too."
Just two days before the accident the two worked together to chase down a criminal. Right after the accident, Winchell decided to run in Saturday's Indianapolis marathon to raise money for Awbrey.
"Never really ever thought about running a marathon before, but I just thought just maybe that would bring attention to the cause," said Winchell.
He brought attention and $1,500.
Awbrey thanked him and the hundreds of others who have helped, supporting not just with dollars and cents, but with prayers and emotional support.
"It's unbelievable the amount of people that have tried to help, that has helped," said Awbrey.
If you would like to donate to the Awbrey family you can either contact the Parke County Sheriff's Office or send an email to Max Winchell at mwinchell@dnr.in.gov.
