500 new jobs coming to Vermillion Co.

Company will be at site of Newport Chemical Depot

NEWPORT, Ind. (WTHI) - When the Newport Chemical Depot completed its mission of neutralizing VX, that meant the end for thousands of jobs.

Thursday, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and Gov. Mitch Daniels announces one company that will start to replace some of those jobs.

The new company coming is in the Telic Corporation . Telic is no stranger to the property since they left in 2007. They manufacture equipment for the U.S. military.

Telic will bring in a range of jobs including administrative and manufacturing positions. the jobs start paying at $37 an hour. Those applying for a job must have a passport because these jobs may require travel. The company said they could create up to 500 new jobs by 2010.

Telic will give former Newport Chemical Depot worker the first opportunity for many of these jobs.

"We promised the base commander that we would look at the folks that already work here first, as the first employees we would like to offer projects to. Then after those folks the people of Vermillion County," Frank Minton of the Telic Corporation said.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Telic Corporation up to $3.8 million in tax credits and up to $125,000 in grants. Vermillion County will consider additional property tax abatement.
