CLAY COUNTY, IL (WTHI) - It's a parent's worst nightmare and that's why police in Illinois are training to protect local schools in the event of a shooting.

Clay County, Ill. officials and the Flora Police Department worked together on a mock school shooting Wednesday morning.

The training exercise lasted about four hours. It included hostage situations, fake victims, shooters and survivors.

A SWAT team made up of local police departments locked down the school and responded just as if shooters were in the school.

Police said while it's something they never want to happen they want to be prepared for everything.

"Not only would this be good training for a school shooting but also with some of the businesses and factories anytime we have an armed intruder would come into that business the same tactics would be used for that," Assistant Chief of Flora Police Geb Borders said.
