CLINTON, Ind. (WTHI) - Police from Clinton and Vermillion County were called out to an
incident that's a part of every parent's nightmare.
Students in one class at South Vermillion High School
described what happened as ten minutes of shear terror. One student
tried to attack a teacher with what the school is calling a kitchen
knife.
According to the South Vermillion School Superintendent Dave Chapman, authorities received word of the attack at around 1:40 Thursday afternoon.
The superintendent told News 10 it happened when a female in the class showed a knife and tried to attack the teacher. He said she brought the knife in her back pack from home.
When teachers nearby heard the commotion, they rushed in and were able to calm the student down.
Fortunately, neither the teacher nor any of the students were hurt.
The girl was taken to the Vermillion County Jail.
"Teachers from accompanying rooms notified teachers who got to the classroom. The teacher held off the student.," Chapman said.
Both police and the school are still wondering what caused the girl to attack the teacher. They do believe she was acting alone and that the was an isolated incident.
The district is concerned about how easily the girl was able to bring a knife to school.
"It always concerns us when there's a weapon involved. It's one of those things where, how could we have prevented this?"
The school has sent a letter home with all students at South Vermillion telling them about the incident.
