CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Some Wabash Valley school children got an up close and personal look at the negative effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

It's part of Red Ribbon Week in Clay County. Fifth graders spent a day at the courthouse, participating in a mock trial with real prosecutors and judges. They also watched drug dogs sniffing for illegal drugs. They even got to drive golf carts with goggles that helped simulate what it's like to drive drunk.

"As the years go on, younger and younger kids seem to be getting into drugs," said Clay City Vice President of SADD Club Brittany Richard. "They need to know what's out there."

The kids made promises to themselves and their families to not do drugs. Program organizers say fifth grade is the perfect age, right before the pressures of middle and high school.
