CLARK CIOUNTY, Ill (WTHI) - Clark County may be on the map for its quaintness, but now is making headlines for it's unemployment number.

A whopping 13.2%. The second highest in the state.

This high rate is triggered by many variables, but here are a few.

People are buying less cars due to an unstable economy triggering nearly 200 layoffs since last August at TRW.

A company making safety electronic parts for the automotive industry.

It's a tough number for the Mayor of Marshall to hear and say.

"A year ago they probably had around 1,100 employees counting some temporaries and now their down to 650," said the Mayor of Marshall Ken Smith.

Another black eye is when Casey Tool and Machine closed up shop late last year.

A company that made residential lighting products laying off over a hundred people.

"It was a shock to the community no one really anticipated this happening," said Tom Monken the Pro-tem mayor of Casey, Illinois.

Terre Haute's less than perfect economy is also a failure factor.

When people work in Indiana and live in Illinois their residency in the Land of Lincoln drives up the number.
