GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Communities came together to support the families of two kids burned in a gasoline fire.

Nicholas Decker, 10, and Joshua Merritt, 11, were playing around a fire pit. That's when a nearby gas container ignited, burning both boys.

Decker died in late May while Merritt remains in Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.

Saturday in Bloomfield, family and friends held a benefit dinner for both families to pay for their medical expenses.

Organizers said they were grateful to be able to help the families during a difficult time.

"I was just sitting on the couch one day, just thinking you know somebody should try to help them out. I really believe God kind of led me to it to try to do something to help them out, " event organizer Brenda Combs said.

Professional sports teams like the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts donated raffle items.

Plus, area pilots offered donation rides with all proceeds going to the family.
