VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Cross Country Town USA is living up to its moniker as Vigo County hosted the NCAA Cross Country Championships. While the athletes have left the green grass behind, they've also deposited plenty of green into local businesses.

More than 500 runners pounded the turf. But multiply that by family, friends and fans and the vibrations are being felt throughout the Wabash Valley economy.

"We couldn't find anything even close to Terre Haute, so we ended up staying in Paris," said Frank and Connie Dorniden, who traveled from Minnesota.

An estimated 4,000 people attended Monday's races. All told though, the weekend of events brings an estimated $400,000 to area motels, gas stations, grocery stores and of course restaurants.

"We went out with the team," said the Dornidens. "There was oh, about 25 people in the group."

Visitors Bureau Director David Patterson said Vigo County's almost 2,000 hotel rooms were booked solid.

"The reach of this extends out to the Wabash Valley," said Patterson. "But then they also carry the message away about what a great capable community we are."

Patterson hoped at least a few people come back to visit, especially on a weekend to see Terre Haute when it isn't Cross Country Town USA.

"It's a great event, great environment," said Rob and Lynda Eckardt who traveled from the Chicago area. "It's great that everyone has to come from all over to right here"

The NCAA finals aren't the only money-making event at the LaVern Gibson Course. Patterson estimated the cross country season brings in 25,000 people and $1 million.
