TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Forty-two motor carrier inspectors will be let go at year's end, saving Indiana $2.5 million as it tries to recover from the recession.
This leaves 41 inspectors, along with state troopers, to inspect vehicles like semis and school buses.
Inspectors monitor things like vehicle weight limits, log book checks and often play a role in drug busts along interstate routes.
"While no agency wants to see any type of a reduction in force, we are faced with the same challenges as many states across the country," Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said.
This latest cut is in addition to Gov. Mitch Daniels' other cost saving measures, including a $150 million cut to higher education funding announced last week.
