VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Two whooping cranes have been stalking the shores of a small lake near the Vigo/Clay County line this month.
Those who live nearby tell News 10 they first saw the cranes on the lake last fall and were surprised to see them return this fall, despite clearing of brush nearby.
Whooping cranes are listed as "critically endangered" according to conservation groups. By 1941, the global population of whooping cranes had dwindled to 15, but wildlife groups report their numbers have grown significantly in recent decades.
