When could Terre Haute see fireworks?

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With a mixture of high temperatures and brittle grass it may be some time before any burn bans are lifted across the Wabash Valley.

The city of Terre Haute has been under a burn ban for almost two months.

Mayor Duke Bennett told News 10 until the city of Terre Haute sees some serious rain, people won't see fireworks.

Bennett also mentioned he’s yet to set a make up date due to the fact he doesn’t want to make any false promises but Bennett says the city could possibly see a show on Labor Day weekend but that it all depends on the weather.

“We had made the decision when we canceled, that we would kind of wait till the end of July and see if the weather improved. I mean obviously if we don't get a lot of rain until now and some point in the fall here, we may not be able to have it. We'd love to do something by Labor Day weekend but it really is just completely dependent if we get enough rain to saturate the ground so we don't have to worry about fires,” said Bennett.

Another concern with the weather is how it's affecting city workers. Bennett says city workers have been told to take extra water breaks.

Hours haven't changed Bennett says; only shifts have started earlier to beat the heat.
