Voters head to polls early

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Signs pave the walkway outside of Vigo County Courthouse.

Inside, a line of voters wait for their turn.

In that line, stands first time voter, Douglas Selby.

"I just turned 18, so yeah, I'm ready to vote," Selby said.

He said he chose to vote early because it'd be difficult to make it out on Tuesday.

"Election day is going to be busier, and I just wanted to get in Saturday, while I could because I have school Monday and Tuesday," he said.

Others like him take advantage of having options.

"This is something not everybody has an opportunity to take part in other states, so this is awesome," Linda Behrendt said.

"My wife works and her hours don't work out where we can vote on election day, so it's easier to come in Saturday," Gary Erickson said.

Officials working the polls said the lines each day have been long.

However, Erickson said, it doesn't matter how long the wait is.

"People fought and died to give me the right to do that. I vote every chance I get," he said.

Employees said the busiest times are the morning and the noon hour.

The average wait time stands at about 30 minutes for voters.

They said if you want to avoid the rush, arrive early. In fact, earlier the better.

Organizers say make sure to bring a photo ID and some patience.

"The line is moving a little slow, but I mean I'm willing to wait, as long as I can get it in before 4 o'clock when it ends," Selby said.

Many voters like Selby said no matter how long the wait, it's worth it to have their vote counted.

Early voting ends Monday at noon in Indiana.

As far as absentee ballots, Vigo County collected more than 6,000 in the 2012 election.
