Voters board held election meeting

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Last week, GOP Chairman Randall Gentry told News 10 he's concerned about how this election is going.

Clerk's office employees processed mailed absentee ballots without a Republican present, which he says is not up to code.

"We had Republicans in every area except that one place, that was just an oversight," Vigo County Clerk Pat Mansard said.

The County Clerk's office is working to fix the problem, but time is running out.

"Only so many people, so many hours of the day, so much money to pay for everything and we're doing our best just to try to get all that done, do it as accurately as we can for all the voters," Mansard said.

Monday, Vigo County Clerk Pat Mansard, her office's employees and a Republican Voters Board representative met in hopes of coming to an agreement and getting the election moving.

On top of the absentee issue, the board said there is another problem.

Board leaders said they found voting applications with signatures that didn't match voter registration forms.

Now, they'll have to verify that information with the voter.

To fix the absentee issue, the Republican Voters Board wants to reprocess the ballots.

Clerk's office employees said it already happened this weekend.

The meeting ended with not much of a solution.

"We just have to get on with the election and this meeting we had today doesn't bode well for that," Mansard said.

Both parties plan to meet again this week, in hopes of coming up with a solution before election day.

It's not yet clear what day this week the groups will meet.

News 10 will continue to follow this story.
