CARLISLE, Ind. (WTHI) - You may not realize it, but many folks take time to volunteer at prisons.

At an advisory board meeting at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, coordinators stressed how important volunteers are to the prison.

Volunteers teach inmates, help with their re-entry into society, and raise money for other good causes.

One Volunteer program, called Fatherhood, helps male offenders keep in touch with their kids at home.

In one program, called PLUS, inmates and volunteers give back to the community together.

"I think the most helpful thing with our program is giving back to the community, because a lot of times, this is the first time they've given back instead of taken and it's therapeutic," PLUS manager Jacquie Mize said.
