Vigo County roads re-paved

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With summer ended, the Vigo County Highway Department reports having re-paved or chipped dozens of county roads.

Department officials estimate their crews have re-surfaced more than 40 miles along 18 separate roads during 2012. They also estimate crews have added chip-and-seal surfaces to more than 100 more miles of roads.

Highway superintendent Gerald Lindsay said the progress is part of a broader plan to improve the county’s highway system. He said over the past two years, the county board has approved $3.5 million to fund road work, and he said some of that money has been spent on new machinery to increase the speed of road projects.

Lindsay said residents have generally been receptive to the work.

“The response has been pretty good,” Lindsay said. “We always have a few folks that would like to have theirs done, and we haven’t got to them yet. Should the council see fit to continue this program, then two or three more years we should be able to pretty much cover the country.”
