Vigo Co. commissioners deny neighbors request to stop Cobblestone

VIGO CO., Ind. (WTHI) - The controversy between Cobblestone Crossings and surrounding Vigo County neighborhoods continues.

Vigo County Commissioners denied neighbors request to stop construction on Cobblestone Crossings apartments.

Commissioners released a statement Thursday night stating they will not halt construction at Cobblestone; however, they encourage the two parties to work out their issues.

Surrounding homeowners of Cobblestone met with commissioners Tuesday to request a stop work order, because they felt the new apartments were decreasing the homeowners' property value.

The attorney representing the neighbors of Woodgate said the apartments are being built illegally.

Even with the possibility of illegally zoned apartments, the commissioners still denied the request.

But the commissioners said they will not grant any more work permits until the issue is resolved.

Rick Wheeler, a Woodgate homeowner said he’s disappointed with the commissioners’ efforts.

Wheeler said, “Now, if they're saying they have legitimate concerns, and things must be somewhat illegal, then why are they now turning around and saying you can go ahead and build? You can continue to build what you’re building; although, there are legal concerns. That doesn't make sense to me!”

Another key concern of Wheeler’s is property value.

Wheeler said after having his house recently re-assessed, the value of his home went down by $19,000; something Wheeler feels is a direct cause due to Cobblestone apartments.

Neighbors plan to hold a neighborhood meeting to discuss the commissioners’ response before they take action.
