TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - It's the season for toys, but health experts want you to remember safety before your kids open presents.

News 10 spoke to Union Hospital's clinical educator for a few reminders.

She said to make sure to pay attention to the manufacturer's recommendations, regardless of your child's age and maturity.

It's important to assess parts beforehand.

A good rule of thumb is toys should not be smaller than the core of a toilet paper roll.

Dangers in the home go beyond your toy box.

"They like bright things and they like shiny things and this is season is all about bright and shiny. When you're decorating your tree, remember those small parts if you have glass bulbs, they can shatter, little hands like to pull on them," Union Hospital ER Clinical Educator Jackie Martin said.

Martin said thankfully, the number of cases they've seen have been minimal.
