'Tis the season for scams

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - ‘Tis the season for scams. Just in time for holiday shopping, scammers are targeting people shopping for holiday deals.

This is one top 10 list you don't want to make. The Better Business Bureau released a list of the top ten scams this year.

And scammers have their sights sets on your pocket book this holiday season.

“It is scary,” said Sharon Forbes, a wary computer user.

No one is exempt from these scams, including Sharon.

“I’ve gotten ones that say you, if you answer this email, you can win a thousand dollar gift card from Walmart or something,” said Sharon.

For someone searching for holiday deals, some of them may seem too tempting to pass up!

They reach you through email, social media, telephone, mail and even text messaging. And many times, they use names of legitimate businesses.

This is why Sharon gets nervous every time she logs on to her computer. Sharon stays in contact with old classmates through Facebook. She buys products online. She checks her email every day.

And she knows looks can be deceiving.

“I usually try to buy from merchants that I already know,” said Sharon.

And just when you think your identity is safe, another scam pops up.

The Better Business Bureau recommends never clicking on links. Save your banking websites as a bookmark on your computer.

“I’m afraid of getting scammed.. I think it’s always something that’s frightening.. I check and see if it’s a secure site,” said Sharon.

Sharon knows if it seems too good to be true...it probably is.
