TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Officials have finished an investigation into the police shooting of Justin Compton.

Compton had escaped from police custody in June of 2012. After a search led to his whereabouts, officials said he attacked a Terre Haute Police officer with a knife. That officer shot and killed Compton.

Wednesday the Vigo County Prosecutor's Office said,  the actions of the Terre Haute officer are consistent with exercising self defense, therefore no criminal charges will be filed.

Prosecutor Terry Modessitt has released a statement saying, "When these types of tragic circumstances occur, I want to take as much time as is necessary for a thorough review of all evidence. This is a very serious situation for both the officer involved, as well as for the family that has lost a loved one."

The prosecutor's office said their findings mean the investigation has reached a conclusion.
