Tainted gasoline in Wabash Valley

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A major gasoline recall hits the Wabash Valley and it may have already affected your vehicle.

About two weeks ago, a BP refinery in the Northern Indiana released a shipment of tainted gasoline to an Indianapolis distributing terminal. Some of that gas came to the Wabash Valley.

News 10 talked with a spokesperson from BP who says two BP gas stations were affected in our area: The first is off of State Road 42 in Brazil, Indiana and the second on West Wolf Street in Sullivan, IN.  

BP says that gas was delivered around August 20 and was available until the 24th. It's important to note that the gas affected was not unleaded. The tainted gasoline lines were mid grade and premium.

But here is how it affects you: BP says this gas, when refined, contained an impurity. They say that impurity actually can cause damage to your vehicle.       

"Anyone that feels they've purchased any of this off specification premium or mid grade,” Scott Dean of BP said, “and is experiencing any sort of symptoms in their vehicle such as the check engine light coming on, a hard starting, and rough idle.  We would suggest they take it to their mechanic or dealership and have it looked at. If it's a fuel related issue we will reimburse the customer."

The company does say the problem has been solved and all BP gas in our area is back up to its standard. They also said that they have new stop gaps in place to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Their main defense will be to double up on the testing of all products leaving a refinery.
