TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Now that we’re in the depths of the worst drought in more than 50 years, some questions is our sun responsible, and if so, can we find a pattern.
In the 1930s, the average sunspot number was 150.
In the 1940s the number dropped to about 10.
In the 1950s we spiked up to more than 200.
In the ‘60s and ‘70s, the numbers were low. Remember the blizzard of ’78?
The ‘80s peaked out again at more than 200 sunspots. With that said, remember the drought of ’88?
Then, there was a sharp drop.
There was an ice storm and the inclement weather of a few years ago. Now, there’s a sudden spike of sunspots and another drought.
If there is a cycle, does that mean we can expect the next big drought in 2037? If so, we’ll be here to cover it for you.
