TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Meet Laura Pickens, a 10th grader, a best friend, and an aspiring student.
"I want to be a nurse in the air force," Pickens said.
However, her passion for flying and an ordinary graduation could be jeopardized, all because of bullying.
Her parents say it's gotten so bad, they've taken her out of school.
This year, she's being taught at home.
"I do love school and I love being in ROTC, that's one thing I do love. But with everything going on with bullying, you name it, I just, don't even know what to do anymore," she said.
Pickens says she has about 30 bullies, calling her names at her locker and in the cafeteria.
She says another student, took her to prom, as a joke.
It doesn't stop when she gets home.
"I get made fun of 24/7, day and night when I'm sleeping I get text messages coming through, calling me a bad name."
Now, her ROTC scholarship has been taken away, and she has to give most of these pins that's she's earned, back.
The whole situation leaves her family frustrated.
Pickens hopes by telling her story, the bullying may stop for her and others.
"I don't want other kids going through what I'm going through because someone might be watching right now, think about what I'm doing and stand up for yourself."
October is National Bullying Prevention Month.
If you or someone you know is being bullied, you can call Girls of Excellence Mentoring Program at (812) 223-2826.
